How can I put in a air conditioner in a 4 foot high by 2 foot window?
In my house we do not have central air, and the only widows I have are a large double set of sliding windows. The problem is that the windows are so tall that if I put a A/C in it, it would leave like 3 feet open to outside. Is there any cheap type of portable A/C that I should use? Or what? Keep in mind that I am only looking to cool one room.

The condensate pan may not be draining properly. Look for the drain line outside and get a wet/dry shop vac. Vacuum the line and look for obstruction in the line (kink, clogged with dirt). If you can reach the indoor coil, spray a gentle stream of water on the coil and look for the water to flow out the line.

Ive got a 120v 20amp gfci outlet off of a 20amp afci breaker so i can go up to 20amps .... dose any one make a 20amp 120v portable air conditioner .... i would get a window unit but the home owners association says no ac's out windows on front of house

my house is on a main road with heavy traffic. So there is a 1 mm of dust inside the house end of every day. To prevent this some one suggested to put airconditioners for the full house, but this will be expensive. Someone suggested that i can buy air purifiers instead can someone clarify the following?
1. if i buy airpurifier and close all windows, how much time it takes for the purifier to clean the air?
2. how frequently should i open the windows to get the fresh air(oxygen) into the house again?
3. Are there any known risks associated with air purifiers because they release a lot of charged particles/ions?
1) Depends on the purifier capacity; they generally list the size of room they are designed to keep clean as they recirculate the air in it. Generally, for a whole house, you would have one in each major room. I just keep one in my bedroom so I sleep in cleaner air.
2) Sounds like the air isn't all that fresh, really. Without AC though it will really get stale/warm if completely closed. Maybe open the windows at nights, when it's cooler, lower traffic/pollutants?
3) It depends on the purifiers. There are ones that filter using conventional filters like the ones in built-in air conditioners; you would buy replacements regularly as they fill with dust and grime. It sounds like you are talking about the ionic ones though, where you clean off the metal plates that attract the dust and other pollutants through a charge as the air passes through, instead of pulling the air through a filter.
Ionic air purifiers are cheaper to run since you don't have to replace filters all the time (though you do still have to maintain them) -- but they do produce ozone. While ozone is good in the upper atmosphere, it isn't so good at ground level; it can worsen respiratory issues like asthma and damage the lungs. I've read some reports that they don't work as well as conventional filter units at purifying air, either (Sharper Image lost a big lawsuit not long ago over this -- they were the ones who first pushed these in the US).

I am looking to install a split air conditioner in a 16 by 12 feet room in my house. I am told that for this size of room, the required capacity of the ac would be 1.5 ton. I want to know the size of refrigerant pipes that I should get built into the wall. I am getting divergent views from technicians. The distance between indoor and outdoor unit will be approximately 15-18 feet.

Have you changed your filters on a regular basis?
If the unit is over 7 years old, call in a duct cleaning company. You can find them in your yellow pages. They will vacuum the ducting and you will be charged based on the number of supply and return registers in the home.
If your condo is less that 7 years old, check the condensate pan under your indoor air conditioner coils. You will need to remove the panel where the coils are located, and check to see if the drain line is plugged and if there is any water in the pan. If yes, clean the drain and pan. Put a diluted (10 parts water to 1 part chlorine bleach) solution in the pan (NOT ON THE COIL!) and flush the pan. If you can see the coils, pick up a coil cleaner from your local home store and wash the coils. otherwise, a very weak solution of soapy water (20 parts water to 1 part detergent) can clean the coil.

I am purchasing a new pet corn snake and was wanting to build my own vivarium/cage for him/her. i want it to be about 38 gallons and it will have plexiglass sliding and locking doors. My first question is does anyone have any idea on any possibilities of a small in tank heater/air conditioning. this is because during summer i work on nature staff at camp raven knob N.C. and my cabin does not have AC (and my houses sux) and during the winter it gets very cold here and since i live in an old house the insulative properties arent great. Is this a plausible idea? kind of like a miniature window air conditioner for a tank? Also any free vivarium plan sites are appreciated.

I get around this stuff pretty well, and have never heard of anything as small as what you're looking for. With a little ingenuity, you may be able to build something that will suffice. An electric lightbulb is a great heater, the higher the wattage, the more heat. (I think it's around 3.5 btus per watt). I built a heated house for a stray cat once, using two 20 watt bulbs under the floor, the cat seemed to like it. The ac will be a bit trickier, but a small fan drawing air across a wetted cloth creates a cooling effect. The ancient egyptians hung drapes accross the openings of their homes, kept them wetted and had slaves fan air accross them. This was the worlds first air conditioning. The best option would be to get your house to keep the temp you want, the little snakey home will follow suite. Best of luck.
