How can I tell if the ionizer on my air filter creates ozone?
I know not all ionizer air filters create ozone, and I have pets that I can't have near ozone. Other ions are fine. I just haven't been using the "Performance booster" for fear it creates ozone. I have Holmes HAP412N-U HEPA-Type Mini Tower Air Purifier.

That's a good question! HEPA filters generally do not rely on external power to ionize the air, and should produce no measurable ozone. Some electrostatic precipitators (and UV germicidal lamps that were used in smoke filters) do make ozone and possibly some nitrogen oxides, which not only damages textiles and rubber products, but even the lungs with extended use.
If there is a metal frame or pins with high voltage across it, it's suspect, but if it has an activated carbon filter afterwards, not much ozone should come through. If there is an on/off switch for the ionizer, just leave it off.
There are a number of ozone test kits, from a few dollars for one-time paper test strips (probably what you might use) to machines costing hundreds of dollars.

It only blows hot defrost. climate control not working at all. Have no book.
The vacuum to the dash is the first problem. Get that fixed and you should have all the airflow positions back. That older system was the first generation atc, and used a temp. sensor under the dash pad to control the a/c function. It also used a vacuum servo to control the blend door. Thus it is possible, that by repairing the vacuum supply line to the dash, that it all may start working like it should. As long as the a/c system under the hood still functions, that is. But that is where to begin, and good luck!!

Is Apatite a safe material to be used on air purifier filters?
I learned that the Sharp air purifiers' HEPA filters have an Apatite component to it that apparently provides antibacterial properties to protect the filters from microbial accumulation. Is Apatite a relatively "safe" material to use for an air filter, i.e. is it safe for the resident who is breathing air that comes through the filter? Apatite (a very general term) is usually made up of phosphorus and calcium, but some variants (ie. arsenates like mimemite) may contain arsenic. Could this be a health issue for users? Would the filters use arsenic-based variants in the first place, or are other forms more prevalent and likely to be used in medical/industrial applications?
Apatite is a group name for hexagonal or pseudohexagonal monoclinic arsenates, phosphates and vanadates.
In general use 'apatite' is often used in particular for the Calcium Phosphate minerals, Fluorapatite, Chlorapatite and Hydroxylapatite.
There is no specific data on health dangers or toxicity for this mineral.
It is unlikely that an arsenate would be used in this application. The other forms are quite prevalent and more of these are actually mined as ore.

Is my landlord in breach of contract if he (she) fails to maintain a central air conditioning unit?
I have a central air conditioning system. The system is outside the unit and under the responsibility of the owner (landlord). The air conditioner consistently freezes over. I have made repeated request for the unit to be repaired. The maintance staff has been here on approximately 10 occasions. On each (or most) occasions their staff needed to add freon to the system. This 'repair' ignored the real problem of leaks in the system. And, as I am told, the condenser was malfunctioning and needed to be replaced. This problem still exists. Are they in breach of the contract?

I need to get an HVAC system cleaned. What is the difference between service from an air duct company that says they can also clean the main furnace or blower unit and fan and using an HVAC company to clean the system? My system is electric. It is 8 yrs old, has never been cleaned and apparently has never had the filter changed.

Hvac will usually only service the units and not clean the ducts. They should vacuum off the coils and fans and apply a coil cleaner to help remove the dirt that has been sucked into the coils over the years.
Sometimes they will want to remove the coil, which means they will remove the freon, take out the coil and chemically clean it.
At 8 years old they may try to sell you a new unit, which you prabably do not need. If you want to find a service company and do not have a recommendation try

I have been researching this for a while now. I cannot seem to find a really good air purifier that is not very bulky, yet can accomodate 320 sq foot room and has good quality. For example, Whirlpool's air purifiers seem to have great reviews. For they only have models for 450 and 500 sq feet room and they are very bulky. I see many tower models, but they are mostly small (for rooms less than 200 sq feet). Please help. Thanks.

The best air purifier for smaller areas is the Fresh Air to Go by ecoquest. They have university testing proving the effectiveness and they are also certified by NASA as the same technology used in the space program to clean the air in the space shuttle and space stations. This unit is very small and portable and can be used in your car, office, single room, etc. I personally have the larger unit in my home and it works great. They are redesigning this particular model which is coming out in the spring of 07 so I would wait for the upgrade. You can get more information here.

How can I put in a air conditioner in a 4 foot high by 2 foot window?
In my house we do not have central air, and the only widows I have are a large double set of sliding windows. The problem is that the windows are so tall that if I put a A/C in it, it would leave like 3 feet open to outside. Is there any cheap type of portable A/C that I should use? Or what? The condensate pan may not be draining properly. Look for the drain line outside and get a wet/dry shop vac. Vacuum the line and look for obstruction in the line (kink, clogged with dirt). If you can reach the indoor coil, spray a gentle stream of water on the coil and look for the water to flow out the line.
