How can I tell if the ionizer on my air filter creates ozone?
I know not all ionizer air filters create ozone, and I have pets that I can't have near ozone. Other ions are fine. I just haven't been using the "Performance booster" for fear it creates ozone. I have Holmes HAP412N-U HEPA-Type Mini Tower Air Purifier.

That's a good question! HEPA filters generally do not rely on external power to ionize the air, and should produce no measurable ozone. Some electrostatic precipitators (and UV germicidal lamps that were used in smoke filters) do make ozone and possibly some nitrogen oxides, which not only damages textiles and rubber products, but even the lungs with extended use.
If there is a metal frame or pins with high voltage across it, it's suspect, but if it has an activated carbon filter afterwards, not much ozone should come through. If there is an on/off switch for the ionizer, just leave it off.
There are a number of ozone test kits, from a few dollars for one-time paper test strips (probably what you might use) to machines costing hundreds of dollars.

Are there good quiet air purifiers that I can buy?
Now that it is spring, my allergies are getting worse. Does anyone recommend a good air purifier? My biggest concern is the noise level (and of course how well it removes particles). I also do not want an ionic purifier because of the ozone, and they usually are not as effective as HEPA. I have heard of the Blueair air purifiers, but I think they are a little pricey. Are there cheaper but still quiet air purifiers around? Or do you pay what you get? If you have any, please give me some air purifier recommendations.

As a consumer of course you are looking for an air cleaner that costs $1, can clean the volume of air in a stadium in a minute, and is as quite as a hummingbird.
Back on planet reality you get what you pay for. Cheap air cleaners have filters that don’t last long and loud motors. Electronic air cleaners need regular washing. That’s ok if you can remember to do it and have the time! They are also susceptible to generating ozone, but ozone can be eliminated with proper maintenance and a carbon post filter.
A good place to start is the Consumer Reports article on air cleaners. Keep in mind not all air cleaners got rated.
Personal story - Friend of mine has allergies, purchased our PM-400 HEPA air cleaner and loves it. The PM-400 has one of the largest HEPA filters and a 13-pound carbon filter for collecting odors. They put it in the hallway between their bedroom and the baby's room (diaper odors). When they are gone they crank it up and when they get home they turn it to a low quiet speed.

We just moved into a basement at my in-laws house (yes, it's just like the freecreditreport.com commercial) but there is a very strong cat urine smell to the basement that is making my eyes water very badly. I am going to try Nature's Miracle, as well as other products, but I am wondering advice about air purifiers. Is it better to go with multiple smaller, and cheaper air purifiers, or is it best to just drop $900 on an IQ Air system (that seems to be rated the best)? I heard one opinion that multiple, smaller purifiers might move more air overall than just one big one.....yet the big expensive models say they cover 900 sq feet. What should I do, and what should I consider when deciding on a purifier? Like I said, it's mostly for odor control, but dust and other garbage in the air as well.
I wouldn't spend that much money for a unit that will do almost the same as any good HEPA/ Carbon air purifier. I got the Austin Air HealthMate and i works great, filter lasts up to 5 years and is has HEPA for particle filtration (ex. dust, mold, dander, dust mites, some bacteria depending on their size, pollen and any other particle over 0.3 microns) and the activated carbon that removes odors, chemicals, VOC's, gases, vapors, etc. Mine cost around $550 with free shipping and it covers up to 1500SqFt. if you place it in a smaller room you will get more air changes per hour which will be very beneficial. I did a lot of research and this unit was the best quality / cost unit i could find. i got mine at MyHealthyPlaces.com, see resource. good luck!
